Originally you could only purchase tropical fish from mom-and-pop stores in the neighborhood. Soon Florida became the top producer for tropical fish in the United States. However, competition from abroad is now threatening local stores and tropical fish farms. Now you can even purchase tropical fish over the Internet.

Tropical fish can be an investment. Some of the more expensive fish can go for as much as $600. Therefore, before you buy a pricey fish make sure you have both the experience and the equipment to care for it.
