Codfish
Cod fish is a delicious and inexpensive dinner treat.
So many enjoy it that illegal fishing for Alaskan cod has now become
extraordinarily profitable and threatens the fish’s health and
their resilience to potential climate change. New figures released by
the Norwegian government suggest that more than 100,000 metric tons
of illegal caught valued at over $350 million was caught in 2005 in
the Barents Sea.
The problem stems from putting short-term profit before long-term sustainability.
The regulations are in place to insure the survival of the cod fish
for the next generation to enjoy. However, fishermen see dollar signs
and ignore government regulations in global waters.
About 70% of the worlds cod fish supply comes from Arctic waters. Therefore,
it is entirely possible that a customer in the United States or Great
Britain could be enjoying a fish meal without knowing the main course
was procured illegally. While some environmental groups have occasionally
advocated boycotts on consumer purchases for fish that are endangered,
government regulators are pushing for more enforcement to secure the
survival of the cod fish.
